Little Owl (Athene noctua) (Ruru waho)

Twelve sub-species of this owl occur globally. The sub-species vidalii was introduced into New Zealand (and Britain) in the 1800s. They are occasionally seen at night on the roadway during our return journey from the Otago peninsula.
