Kingfishers (Coraciiformes)
New Zealand Kingfisher (Halcyon sancta) (Kotare)
Bright metallic blue with pale orange chest, are very numerous during winter/spring around peninsula lagoons and common through other periods.
Despite the birds name , fish is not the main part of their diet, these birds will eat worms, crabs, insects, skinks, mice, and even small birds.
