Pukeko (Porphyrio porphyrio) (Purple swamphen)

This iconic native occurs almost everywhere around New Zealand, particularly in wetlands, swamps, esturies and wet grassed areas. It usually runs from danger, but if spooked will fly short dispances with its legs dangling. Usually found in large family groups. This species is a relative of the endangered Takhe and has benefited from Elm Wildlife tours conservation efforts.
